Art Book Collection Batch 4
Wendling Desk
This is my favorite book by Wendling. Its composed of mainly horse and centaur sketches. I love seeing her technical drawings.
Treasure Planet
I am not a fan of this movie I have to say. A while back while I was still in high school in my little city in Iowa Ron Clements came to guest speak at our art center (he’s actually originally from my hometown). When he came there that was when Treasure Planet just got released in theaters. At that time I was working at our movie theater and I wore the Treasure Planet button to the lecture as support. Ron talked about many things but Treasure Planet was one of them you could see the man was proud of. I feel so bad it didn’t turn out as great as he’d hoped. I felt the movie was lacking with the female audience. Although of course Glen Keane didn’t disappoint with the Silver animation. Also one of my instructors in college was the 2d cg integration artist on this movie so it was great to hear about some of the facts and such that went into this production. Some of the designs in this book are great. I am not a fan of some of the alien designs though. That was one of the major things that stuck out in this movie. The characters and aliens all had different designs that didn’t seem to all fit in this world together. If I had to choose a movie of this caliber that was amazing in my opinion was definitely Titan AE. However I’m supposed to be promoting this book so I will say if your a fan of this movie or the designs this is great to own. If your not I’d pass it by.
Alien Race
When this book was first announced I was blown away by the preview images. I kept a tab on this book until it hit stands then got my copy. The artists in this book did a great job. So many great designs. Especially the thumbnail sketches!
Massimo Carnevale Icon
This man knows where its at. This book is just amazing. His sketches and color usage is breathtaking. It leans more predominant on male characters and comic art with a couple of ladies. This is well worth it to get. Trust me you won’t be dissapointed.
Bambi Sketchbook Series
I got this book from a friend when I graduated high school. As time went by I was surprised to find that this book is a valued piece of art. Several years ago I did some research and found out it was worth $200. Then couple years went by again and it looked as though they printed more of these books and sold them so the $200 price mark went way down. It was still a great ride though. The sketches in this are great. Especially the deers.
Force Dynamic Life Drawing for animators
These series of books are the best I say. I am really picky on getting life drawing books. Most of the ones out there I don’t think are great at all. They lack gesture and render them in shading thinking just because it looks good it qualifies it to be an example. That’s not all what life drawing is! Technical drawings are key to a foundation of life drawing. If you don’t have the foundation proportions go off and contour drawings start taking over. Actually come to think of it these series is all I own on life drawing I believe.
Binto Box Paul Linsley
This is a small booklet on his drawings. I’d like to see him do a larger thicker scale book. But from the drawings I see in this I like.
The Drawings of Gustave Dore
This guys one of my favorite artists. His style of crosshatching is great! He’s a classic artist that did a lot of the illustrations for editions of Shakespeare and the bible. I got this book in the bargain section at Barnes and Noble.
Shadowline The art of Iain McCaig
This guy is the man! I’ve spoken about him before. This book is one of my top 5 favorite books in my collection. Its not hard at all to sell this guys book to people since his drawings are phenomenal. Trust me and pick this book up. You will be greatly surprised at this guys caliber. I’d love for him to do another book or another gnomon dvd. Once you see this guys work all you want is more. Which is why I now own all three of the new star wars art of books. Its like a drug!
Superman Infinite City Carlos Meglia
Now I know this isn’t considered an art book but I had to throw in this comic. For me it is an artbook since the designs of superman and all the other characters are so unique as well as his backgrounds. I stumbled across this guy couple months ago. I found his blog and loved his artwork so I ordered this comic to have. As I did more research on the guy I found out that he passed away in 08. Such a sad loss with a great artist. I only wish I had known of him sooner.
The Art of Prince of Egypt
This book is a great have if your a fan of animation or the art of. There are tons of Egyptian inspired scenery. I love the character designs in this movie. So stylized and the use of color is great!
The Art of Nicktoons
I am a Nickelodeon baby. I grew up on the gems of Nickelodeon. I remember we had just gotten cable for the first time when I was around 8 and I had turned on the tv and was blown away to see Doug. I called to my sister and said something like “Look Sadie there’s a cartoon on!” At that time you didn’t find too many cartoons on regular channels. From then on I was hooked. Even through middle school to jr high when the mtv craze hit everyone would talk about what was on mtv. I used to say I watched mtv but I always lied and went home and watched Nickelodeon. I also remember I had to have been like 15 at the time and I was watching cartoons and my mom asked me “Why do you still watch cartoons?” I remember looking at her and saying “I don’t know.” I guess its a little foray into what industry I’d find myself in for a career. Anyways this book is great its got a ton of Nickelodeon shows in this and has about 1-3 pages of art on each. Whats so great about this book is the cover actually has slime that you can push around. Its very entertaining. I just have to make sure I keep my cat away from it. I’d hate for it to split open and get all over everything.
